Italy has a rich architectural history. It would be a wonderful experience to stay in one of the historical buildings. Yet, there are few traps that you need to be aware of before booking an accommodation and after your arrival:

Trap 1: Misleading Discount

When you are offered an accommodation discount online, you should be aware of the criteria in claiming the discount. In the past, there were complaints that the hosts set unreasonable criteria for claiming the stated discount when the guests arrived, for instance, they had to be a member of WWF or UNICEF.

Tips:

  • Read the terms and conditions thoroughly

  • Ask the hosts about criteria for claiming the stated discount

  • Be suspicious when the rate is unreasonably cheap

Trap 2: Change of Room without Notice

Apart from misleading discounts, there were increasing complaints that the guests were told their rooms being occupied, and then given other rooms which were of lower quality or located in other areas.

Tips:

  • Book the accommodation through reputable and refundable websites or tourist agencies, such as Airbnb and Booking.com

  • Read other tourists' feedback before booking an accommodation

Trap 3: Theft

Hotel intrusion accounts for 5% of the crimes in Italy. Since it is a standard practice that the hosts are not liable for any loss of the guests, your should pay extra attention on your personal belongings.

Tips:

  • Choose accommodations located in safe areas, such as near the police station and away from the main tourist sites

  • Lock the suitcase with luggage lock and security cable

  • Bring along passport and valuables when going out

  • Hang the 'Do Not Disturb' sign on the door even when you are not in the room

Hanging this sign may keep you safe from theft.

Make your stay enjoyable by being cautious before booking the hotel
