We know travelling in Italy is an exciting yet nervous experience. Here are some general insider tips that could make a difference between travelling smartly or being scammed.

Tip 1: Don't Act Like a Tourist

Italians always dress formally. To blend in with the locals, try not to wear sandals, shorts or Bum bag .

Use mobile devices to navigate as studying map in public will expose yourself as a tourist.

Ask the salesperson to offer you a plain shopping bag instead of the one with brand logo to contain your newly-bought Valentino. Show it off to your friends but not to thieves in Italy.

Tip 2: Always Stay Alert to the Surrounding

Apply this golden rule everywhere in Italy. Pay extra attention in major tourists attraction (Read here for more information about Rome), busy markets, and public transportation. Expert thieves, that includes children, would not let you feel a thing when stealing from you in these busy spots. The video below show how common pickpockets are in Italy:

Tip 3: Slim Down Your Wallet and Front Pockets

Only bring an adequate amount of cash and consider using credit cards with PIN. During your visit, carry the wallet with you in your front pocket, not at your back. If you don't have a front pocket, you may consider this well-designed money belt. Put the valuables such as passport and most of the cash inside the belt. Prepare 10 or few Euros in your pockets to mislead the robbers that is all you have in case of robbery.

Tip 4: Make sure you are well-insured

As most of the street crimes in Italy are aiming to obtain property, consider purchasing insurance that covers loss on:

  1. Personal baggage

  2. Personal money

  3. Travel document

  4. Travel ticket

Tip 5: Make Copies of Necessary Documents

  1. Passport

  2. Travel Itinerary

  3. Confirmation letters of accommodations and travel tickets (Ideally in Italian)

  4. Emergency Contact Numbers
