Transportation in Italy can range from trains to water taxis. With such a diverse range of transportation, make sure you pay attention to the below traps:

Trap 1: Illegal Taxi

Many taxis in Italy are non-licensed. They can charge you triple or even more than a licensed one.

Tips:

  • Choose a white, licensed taxi which has fixed fares

  • Get a licensed taxi from an official taxi station

  • Ask the hotel staff to book a taxi (NOTE: The meter will start running once the booking is confirmed)

  • Do not hail a taxi from the streets other than emergency

Trap 2: Extra charge at ticket machine

Bear in mind that 'ticket helpers' at main train stations like the terminals (Stazione di Termni) and central station (Stazione di Centrale) are unauthorised. They will charge you for a tip or even grab your change. In the worst scenario, the accomplice of the 'helpers' will pickpocket you when you are focusing on purchasing the tickets.

Tips:

  • Buy the tickets online from official ticket retailers, such as ItaliaRail

  • Do not talk to unauthorised people; Official staff are distinguished with dark red uniform

  • Seek help at the information centre

  • Do not tip the 'ticket helpers'

Trap 3: Fake Driver Guides

Drivers are not supposed to charge for guiding tourists. A tour guide must be authorised by Italian Tourism Board after passing legal and public written and oral exams. Some travel guides may wear fake licences to deceive tourists. You may risk from paying more if you join a driver guide.

Tips:

  • Check your tour guide's license

  • Be cautious when the drivers are very enthusiastic in introducing tourist attractions, they may charge the passengers for tips

Legal taxis are recognised by the taxi signs on top of the taxis. They are always white.
